Never See "0 Comments" On Your Site Again…Guaranteed!
Tired of pouring your heart and soul into quality posts for your site and then watching them sit there for days with a big “0 Comments” label telling the world that nobody is reading them? How many potential paying advertisers have clicked away from your site with the feeling that your site just isn’t worth reading?
The quick-fix solution is here! Forget the junk that you read about “ask your readers questions” and “start follow-up conversations in the comments” - that’s A-list stuff that doesn’t work if your blog has a total of daily readership of….3. Let’s get real!
QUICK-FIX #1: THE HYPERLINK FAKE-OUT!
This fix is a little evil and is easily spotted by readers, but it’s the best way to make a killer first impression to new visitors and advertisers. All you have to do is go in to your site’s template and edit it so that you add an extra number before your comment count code which gives your site the appearance that you’re receiving a massive amount of comments. For an example using Blogger, putting the ‘5′ in this piece of code:

Changes the pathetic “0 Comments” into an instant “50 Comments“! Depending on the numbers you choose, you could give yourself thousands of comments! If you put the number after the comment count code (numComments), you can give yourself “15 comments” instead of the lonely “1 Comment” link.
When readers click on the link, it will be pretty obvious what’s going on, but how many first-time visitors and advertisers are interested in reading your comments section? First impressions are all that matter but the problem can be solved by….
QUICK-FIX #2: THE RAVING READER REVOLUTION!
Take a play out of the John Chow e-book and create a few fake names and then go writing comments for your own posts! Sure it’s sneaky, but what an awesome way to give the appearance of a site with a large readership!
Take it to the next level and start your own interesting debates in the comments which take the opposite opinion of your post. A big hallmark of a site with credibility is a readership that leaves longer comments than just “great post” or “I agree“.
By writing your own comments, you’re showing visitors and advertisers that you’ve got a readership who cares about what you write and they may even be inclined to write their own opinion in the comments. Remember: Success breeds success!
QUICK-FIX #3: THE BACKLINK BAIT!
Everyone loves a backlink to their site! If I visit a site and they offer me an easy way to get a free backlink, there’s about a 110% chance I’ll do it! How does it work with comments? Easy! Remove “no follow” and/or install “do follow” so that every link left in the comments section gets followed by Google. I have a list of sites that do this and you won’t be surprised to find out that I’m a frequent daily commentor on these sites! And on some sites I’m the only commentor! Do this and you’ll get me as at least one extra commentor!
Check out this easy guide on How To Remove ‘No Follow’ From Blogspot Comments
Congratulations! Your site has the appearance of success which will make it magnetic to new readers!

This is crazy stuff! I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this before. How can I do this in Wordpress?
by John Rowse
For Wordpress you need to install the “do follow” plugin for comments to be followed by Google. I’m not sure how to do the Hyperlink Fake-out in WP though.
by Kumiko
Looks good to me. I’m tired of seeing “0 Comments” on my site for weeks after every post. I might give this a try and see how it works.
by David Baldacci
No, it’ll never work. Most posts receive less than 20 comments even on problogger. if you make it higher than that, ppl will know it’s fake
by make money
Hi make money! You’re right, and I don’t recommend inflating your comments too much. Just keep it to a reasonable amount and you should be fine!
by Kumiko
hm.. this is good advice to follow…
hope I got many comment after this ..
by Liga Kampung n Manga Fan
This is a good advice
never heard before
by Hannie
Bad idea, soon as readers discover you are fooling them by trying to look more important than you really are, they’re gone and will never come back. You should take a bit of pride in your blog. The only one you will fool is yourself in the end.
by Bob
Somehow I don’t like that variant about editing code… but I will install “do follow” plugin for my blog today, hope to get more comments. However I am not happy with comments like “Nice post”, “Great post, thanks”… LOL
by IngaOz
Unfortunately, every single “quick-fix” has flaws:
#1 like Bob said, by fooling readers with such silly tricks will only make a fool out of you. If someone wants to leave a comment after all, don’t you think that they will notice that there are no comments and will never post a comment they intended
#2 might work, but then instead of just pouring your heart and soul into posts you will have to do the same for comments. Waste of time, if you ask me.
#3 after all the “do follow” hype, there are rumours that Google will lower the “authority” of blogs and sites that have a huge number of outgoing links. Even if that is not the case, you still have to inform your readers that your blog has the “do follow” plugin.
An honest approach would be to either write a unique post that majority of readers will be interested in or wait until your readership increases.
by arcom
Hello,
for me, number 3 is only acceptable “quick-fix”, but I’m just out of luck completely here. On my blogger site I did everything to erase “nofollow”, but it just doesn’t work for some unimaginable reason. My wordpress blog is hosted on wordpress and it seems that only on your own domain you can install nofollow php file.
Bonkers.
by webaction
Hello, WebAction …
You wrote, “it seems that only on your own domain you can install nofollow php file.”
Was this just a slip of the tongue, or are you maybe a little mixed up?
What you want to install is the “dofollow” plugin, right? WordPress already comes with “nofollow” installed as the default.
Have you tested it? Copy/pasted the source code into NotePad and click “Find” and type in “nofollow”? You’ll see it right away, if it’s there. If it’s not there,
well, then it’s not there and your job is done.
Warmest regards …
Elizabeth
by Elizabeth Adams
I disagree with all of these, largely agreeing with what arcom said.
#1. I just wouldn’t do, people will latch on and not bother visiting. You’re only impressing yourself.
#2. That’s all fine and dandy, but what happens if one of your readers strike up a conversation? It’s more trouble than it’s worth and I’d rather have 1 comment from somebody who isn’t me, than 100 comments than are (goes without saying).
#3. Yeah, Do Follow is something, but then you’ll more likely get spammy comments from individuals whos names are “adsense tips online” or “free copywriting tips” or “web 2.0 templates”. I’ve got a script that removes nofollow from people who comment 10 or more times. By that time I’m pretty aware that they read because they think I’m a damn good writer, not because they are gagging for a piece of my pagerank. I’d rather have a ‘reader’ (human beings that have done, and will conintue to do so, promote the blog offline - say like “read this, my mate did it, it’s funny” or “I like this blog, why don’t you do it too) than faux commenters that are grasping onto my success.
by Rhys
Great ways….Not really fair but good…..Can I trust that you have 12 comment for this post so far?
by hamid
Estoy de acuerdo con lo de remover la etiqueta nofollow, las otras dos alternativas no me parecen muy éticas. Si algún visitante hispano llega acá puede ver mas detalles sobre como remover la etiqueta no follow.
¡¡Exitos Kumiko!!
by Fabian
If you allow comments to be followed, it’s probably worthwhile to advertise it. I know that I personally check the source code of a site to see if it has the dreaded ‘nofollow’ enabled. Making it obvious that my comment will earn me a backlink would save a little effort and gain an extra comment on those days when I’m feeling lazy.
by slaptijack
Hello, slaptijack …
What I’ve been wondering is …
How can we test to make sure it’s “working”?
That people actually are getting backlinks?
When I use some of those online backlinks checkers, nothing ever shows up,
neither blog comments nor forum posts. Do you know … am I checking in the wrong place, or are we all just chasing our tails with this thing?
Much obliged for any light you can shed on this side of the coin.
Warmest regards …

its great to see you have follow in your comments. else it s almost useless dropping a comment..
for instance i saw that problogger has no follow.
by barbi
Hey guys, you are all fooled by Komiko again. Komiko is trying to show you how to get lots of comments by writing something controversial again.
If you promote some tricks that is not ethical, you will for sure get lots of comments on your post.

by A Tentative Financial Blog
You are really desperate for comments if you do any of these. I would never do this. I enjoy “real” comments much, but I could never cheat them.
by Jennifer
Lots of people have said they’d never return to a blog if they found someone doing any of these - but I often never return if I see all “0 Comments”!
by Kumiko
Not having any comments on my posts is a little sad…I don’t think saying that you have 10 comments instead of 0 is that big of a deal. I’m not going to alter my code to do it, but I don’t think it’s a blogging sin.
I did remove the nofollow on my template, and have put a little thing on the side. However, my comments have not increased at all. I think it may be because no one reads my blog.
by SavingDiva
LOL @ SavingDiva!
In all serious it’s probably the biggest reason why no one comments is that no one is reading the blog. I don’t think faking comments is really the way to go. Instead just wait for the traffic to increase.
In the meantime, I think the best way to get comments going is just to FORCE your friends to make a comment or two on your blog to get the ball rolling. I know trying to get your friends to comment can be like pulling teeth sometimes but you’d probably have a better shot than hoping some stranger will.
by colin
any comments?
mm… I agree …?
by Jack
just had to see if you really had 24 comments
interesting idea. i’d have to agree with some of the others that your visitors would see right through it.
i like what some of the other blogs are doing with the top commentators plug-in. Like, the top 2 commentators for the month of june get a free review.
by Julie
Hi Kumiko, as per some of the previous comments, I’m just checking and counting! lol

Maybe leaving a comment to encourage people to comment is the best idea..haha..
There was a period of time i had been having 0 comments on my old Guitar blog, and when i typed a post to encourage people to give feedback, i received about 5 comments the next day!
You could try that though besides being evil to trick bloggers..
by John Leow
Kumiko,
Some interesting strategies. I’m not too sure about number one.
By the way, I took “No Follow” off a while ago so I’ll be looking for your comments…..lol
by wotZcool
hmmm…. let me think for a while… a NO?
by Steve Yu
If the “0 comments” label is disturbing for you then you might consider hiding the number of comments and display a “Leave a comment” link. Or you can go even further and display “If you liked this post or you have something to add, please leave a comment” (naturally, “leave a comment” part is a link).
by arcom
Its a Crazy Stuff. Anyway, but if it works it is great. Any blogger wants comments to his / her post and if in this way he / she can accumulate some comments - then nothing is wrong. At least the blogger gets some satisfaction.
by Jane Parker
Another option i use to get a blog started is pay people :D. If you pay them to comment on your blog, then you can generate lots of comments quickly, easily, and with very little effort.

I think #3 is the best one there. Number one would just be for fun, and number 2 seems like a lot of work
by Jason
Two types of thought processes…one that believes the end justifies the means and another the opposite. You seem to go with the former. There are many companies that play this game also in the physical world I suppose and it works.
I’m writing a blog on Public Relations. Though it talks about the practice targeted towards industry people who might not be blogging, it also focuses on how bloggers can take advantages knowing some PR tactics and tools . So I suppose general bloggers might get interested in a chit chat as well. I will sure remember this.
Nice blog, by the way.
by hobbithob
Excellent tips!
Commenting on my own site seems like a good idea… And not so different than talking to myself.
Take it easy!
by Sofcore
Hi Kumiko
My blog never had any comment since I set it up on Nov last year. Yes, it is frustrating to see zero comment despite hundreds of unique visitors each day (I monitor my blog using statcounter…)
Why don’t you be the first to comment on my blog?
Cheers!
by raiedzall
What is the point in faking comments, putting fake stats or anything else like that… have you ever looked at a blog and thought
“Oh what a lot of comments… I must bookmark it” link to it even….
I doubt this ‘trick’ makes any difference what so ever…
if anything you risk making yourself look a fool… though, that could actually get you backlinks…. maybe there is something in this after all
by Jeremy
I’ve never thought that Jeremy, but I have thought “this blog doesn’t get any comments…i won’t bother to bookmark it”!
by Kumiko
I will be sure to do quick fix #3 and allow Google to follow the commenting link. However I think I will skip quick fix #1 and #2 ^_^
I’ll get on it tonight so hopefully you’ll swing by hehe

by Etienne
Hmmm, personally I bookmark based on content rather than the number of comments left…. in fact a lot of sites I bookmark are not even blogs, they are conventional sites that do not have a comments feature….
by Jeremy
Kumiko, have you ever heard the phrase: “never judge a book by its covers”. Same can be said for blogs: “never judge a blog by its (lack of) comments”.
Admiting that you never bookmark a blog that has 0 comments makes you a superficial person, IMHO. Who knows how many good blogs you already missed?
by arcom
I have a couple of blogs, the ones that earn do not get comments, they have non savvy readership, if they want to know something they e-mail me… they may not comment but they are not “add blind” either… hence these sites pay better than a tech / internet based blog I have….
by Jeremy
hmm…kumiko, does google index secure pages ? blogger comments are on SSL pages..
by gautam madeshia
@arcom - If they’re such good blogs, why don’t people comment?
@gautum - The comments box is SSL, but the comments appear on the permalink post page which is seen by Google.
by Kumiko
Another alternative would be to remove the comment option altogether. I have noticed that on a few very popular sites. Perhaps to some it would give the impression that the blog is so popular that the author does not have time to deal with comments.
by Michelle
This is my first comment on your blog, keep up the interesting posts. I am going to try the “No Follow” trick from my blog, The Daily Kimchi. Thanks for the tip!!
by Gdog
Kumiko,
A good blog (content) is often as a good (content) site.
Some had experienced the “comment would be moderated”, some have not a site-blog, some want to use info-product-whatever anonimously, some comment similar-to-previous-not-quite-favourable-comments and find those never show up (deleted by blog owner - 99% of cases / sometime real software problem - as happen to my previous here comment .. )
THIS make people to be read-only rather than click the comment link … not to mention the TRUE fact that 50% of bloggers barely have idea of what and how to do on them own blog …
by Valentin
Interesting - but I wouldn’t do some of those things (why fake numbers or leave fake comments-I’d rather have real connections with real readers even if it means less numbers) I would like to enable the do-follow though - after all everyone likes more links and would be a benefit to visitors. But I can’t figure out how to do install a plugin on wordpress - I think I have to have my own website and be using wordpress? I don’t know I’m not the tech oriented.
by Lady Rose

Hi Kumiko, ref you comment:
“@arcom - If they’re such good blogs, why don’t people comment? “
I think you completely missed the point arcom made “dont judge a blog by its comments”
and my point about some high paying niche blogs not getting comments because the readership is not familiar with the format…
Remember… blogs have very good SEO and for that reason are particularly useful for niche “websites” (as opposed to conventional blogs).
It is a question of target audience and content….
Don’t close your eyes to what else is out there…
Try a niche non-blogger blog and see the difference….. you may not get any comments but you can earn up to 100x more per unique visitor if you find a good one (niche), they can be very profitable, and low maintenance
by Jeremy
#1 and #2 seems evil, and you may not get away with it always. #3 WILL hurt your PR, so I don’t use it either.
