5 FREE Ways To Turbo-Charge Your Blog

Forget the e-books that charge you a fortune for advice that you can easily find elsewhere. Here are 6 completely FREE ways to turbo-charge your blog’s traffic and boost it’s presence in the blogosphere! And they all come with a money back guarantee! :)

1. Be a comment whore on the right blogs

Commenting on other blogs frequently (and with quality comments) is a well known way to increase your blog’s exposure. Unfortunately, many blogs use the “no follow” tag which means that when you drop a link to your site in the comments, it won’t be followed by Google and be considered a ‘real’ link. Lucky for you, Court has a large list of blogs that don’t use the “no follow” tag which are ready and waiting to give you some link love!

2. Give your blog a makeover

Blogger provides bloggers with a pathetic 39 uninspiring templates for your blog. You can either do what I’ve done and spend 168.3 work hours customizing it, or you can head over to Free Blogger Skins and get a beautiful new template for your Blogger blog. Original templates are not just for Wordpress users!

3. Use the most underused promotional tool

Blog Carnivals are one of the best ways to promote your turbo-charged super awesome content! Basically, the site lets you submit your posts to other blog’s link lists - view my “Blogging for Cash” carnivals for an example.I receive about 25 requests for link exchanges every day and only accept a chosen few - but send me a link to some

awesome content and you’re 100% guaranteed to be featured in my Blog Carnival! The site lets you submit your posts to 1000’s of other Blog Carnivals and is one of the best ways to promote your content and get quality linkbacks!

4. Get a favicon

What’s a favicon?? Favicons are those little graphics that are seen in the address field of most browsers. They are a fabulous way to “brand” your blog, give it more recognition and give it a small touch of professionalism.

Getting a favicon is a crucial move if you’re on a Blogger blog as it gives your site it’s own brand rather than giving Blogger more free advertising. Check out this easy tutorial for how to add a favicon to your Blogger blog.

5. Apply offline rules

Just because you’re a blogger doesn’t mean that the rules and ethics of the offline world don’t apply. In business, there’s nothing wrong with asking people to try your product and it’s the same in the blogosphere. But it’s how you do it that will see your blog either go turbo or crash! When asking people to visit your blog, instead of “Nice site. Check out mine at www……” try to be a little friendlier and ’sell’ your content instead of your blog. Try:

Hi. I really like your post on why AGLOCO will fail. Do think the viewbar will be released this millenium? I’ve written a similar post that you may find interesting. It’s about some of the biggest scams that are circulating around the internet today. I’d be really honored if you came and commented with what you think about it. Keep up the great blogging!”

Is it kissing ass? Not if you’re honest about it. Is it hard work? Definitely. Does it work a million times better than just saying “Check out my site”? You bet!

I realy like your #4 idea… When I think about it, sites that have a favicon do appear (in my eyes) to be more professional.

Considering I run my own blog off Blogger (blogspot), I think it would be a benefit to have one.

In your opinion, what else do you think would make a blogspot blog (like mine) look better?

Every body else’s input is also appreciated.

Regards,

by David

Hi David! I’d try losing the navbar at the top (you can search my site to find out how) and getting rid of the border around the top graphic. Good luck with your site!

I also agree that the favicon really improves sites respectability. I wonder if it also is considered by SE’s.
I am gaining a slight suspicion that some blog traffic programs like Blog Explosion may be a bad thing to use if you run Adsense. I was thinking this and noticed Dosh Dosh also made a note about the possibility.

hey kumiko, well here is another link exchange request from blogaboutyourblog.

let me know if you are interested :)

Thanks for the tips, no.3 and no.4 sound very good. The list of no follow comments will also be pretty useful. - Although, I think comments are most useful when you get on the best blogs and say something useful

Can I ask, do you regret having a .blogspot domain, rather than your own?

Here’s another way to Turbo-Charge:

7. Social bookmarking sites

You can use Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit etc. to get your blog high exposure. People like John Chow, Matt of Net Business Blog, Ilker of The Thinking Blog had great success with Digg.

Thanks for the link on how to upload the favicon! I made one yesterday then I realized i don’t have a clue on how to add it!
AGLOCO Scam posts .. please.. keep ‘em comin’ <3

I argee with the Favicon, looks very pro. During my morning coffee(s) I go over a few of my fav blogs (your RSS feed is one of them).

Social Book marking is a big one for me, reddit is one that keeps popping up daily.

@James - Yes, BlogExplosion does appear to violate Adsense’s terms. I’m pretty sure that directing traffic to your site via their “paid to surf” program is a violation but I don’t see how the “Rent My Blog” program is any different from buying links.

@Richard - Yes and no. Sometimes I wish I’d registered a domain but sometimes I’m also quite proud to making money on a free blogspot blog…I’m proving it’s all about the content and that you shouldn’t judge a site by it’s domain.

@KelvinKao - I love Problogger, but why would I want to provide my readers with less information to give ProBlogger more readers?

Hi Kumiko!
Thanks for mentioning the list of blogs that follow! A lot of people are figuring out that it’s a great way to get links.

It’s funny to me that more people don’t realize how easy it is that way. The list is approaching 200 blogs now. People could definitely raise their Technorati rankings in a hurry if they took advantage of it.

Thanks for all you do, I love reading your blog and check it every day. Take care!

Hi Kumiko,

I’m new to blogging…really enjoy your site and find myself learning new things everytime i visit. Do you have any recommendation for me on evsionlab.com as well?

Thanks

To get more traffic, of course. =P
How I love answering rhetorical questions.

by kelvinkao

Kelving - I’ve been linked to from Problogger twice before and know how much traffic a link gets. Considering with the group writing project I’d be one link in 250+, I’ll get more traffic from putting my reader’s interests first.

Thanks for the input Kumiko.

I’ll lose the border around my header and see about getting rid of the navbar.

Thanks again!

@Haroon - what negative comments do you have about it?

I really like the Blog Carnival idea. I’ve heard of other bloggers utilizing this site. I guess it is about time to jump in.

Hey Kumiko, great tip on Blog Carnival. I’m definitely gonna check into it. You’ve got a pretty nice blog going on. I like all the pink everywhere it’s pretty cute. hehe

Your post also reminded me that I haven’t added a favicon to my site yet. I added a little favicon of me covering my face with a Hello Kitty pillow… I think it looks kinda weird though. I need to make a better favicon… but what should it be? Hmm…

Anyway. Keep up the awesome blog Kumiko!
