Can Charles Lau Help You Make Money Online?
I know what you’re thinking. We’ve got ourselves yet another “make money online” blog that makes use of that trusty MistyLook theme that everyone seems to use. Great. What could this Charles Lau guy offer me that I haven’t read a million other places before. And what’s up with that cheesy smile, crossed arms, and disgustingly cheap PhotoShop job that he calls a top banner?
Market Your Business with Charles Lau
Charles Lau dot Com has only been around since June 2007, so it’s a relatively young blog. That hasn’t stopped Mr. Lau from busting out the content like there’s no tomorrow though. In fact, he maintains a posting schedule that is actually better than one-per-day, bringing his total post count to nearly 300 in just over two months. That’s a lot of reading, but will all this reading be worth our while as remarkable people trying to make money online?
Looking at the About page, Charles tells us that his blog “will discuss about marketing ourselves online with the various tools available right here.” His goal is to sift through and review various strategies and products that can be used to market your business or product online, including books, websites, software, and multimedia content. He also hopes to think of “creative ideas to differentiate yourself from the crowd.”
Alert the Grammar Police
I’m not normally the type to peg out minor spelling mistakes and inconsequential grammatical errors, but Charles Lau dot Com is filled with a not-so-fantastic grasp of the English language.
Take one of his most recent posts, for example. The title is Take An Existing Material, And Turn It Into Useful Marketing. You can take existing material; you don’t take an existing material. Delving deeper into the post, we find lines like “they are attracting huge crowd everyday“, “do you have some websites which you have to go back frequently“, and “many of these sites are simply crowd puller.” I know, it’s not a big deal, but errors like this start to get on your nerves as a reader pretty quickly. Believe it or not, it’s worse than John Chow.
Redundancy is Bad
The category names could definitely be better as well. It’s clear that Charles wants to differentiate his posts on the basis of whether it’s a review, an article, or miscellaneous, but placing the word “Article” in front of more than half of the categories just looks ugly. And we all know that being the king of ugly can shove visitors out the door.
Having an extremely long tagline for the blog — which you can see above the header image — is probably not such a bright idea either. It’s bloody 19 words and takes up two lines! This is one of the first and easiest things that Mr. Lau can fix. Brevity, my friend. It’s called brevity.
What About the Content?
If you can lay your grammar police badge aside for just a moment, you may discover that Charles Lau dot Com has some useful information for people looking to market themselves online. He seems to have a preference for embedding videos, which cheapens the feel of the blog even beyond its generic MistyLook appearance. Again, if you can get past the videos — which aren’t all that entertaining to begin with — you might be able to find something worth reading. Be warned though, because Charles Lau tends to be a talkative one.
Here are a few posts that caught my eye:
- How Does It Feel Like To Order A Review?
- My Learning Curve In Internet World
- The Whole Idea About Marketing
- Website Video Review 3: EverydayWeekender.com
- Stop Reasoning, Start Pathing Your Route!
Yeah, the titles aren’t the best. There’s also a lot of unused space which creates for a sense of emptiness on the blog.
Get Reviewed For Free
Granted, Charles Lau dot Com doesn’t have the biggest audience right now, but it’s hard to pass up a price like free. The self-proclaimed “author, entrepreneur, investor, opportunist and unemployed” wants to review you for free. This isn’t limited to reviewing websites either, as he’ll gladly do software and books as well. And it looks like his reviews are pretty extensive, often involving YouTube-embedded videos.
