Can You Make Money Guest Blogging?

Make money by charging people to guest blog on your site!

Someone once offered Darren Rowse $4500 for the opportunity to write a post on Problogger.net - and he turned them down!

Why did he do it? Because they wanted to write about something that he wouldn’t have endorsed. I respect that but I’m also a big believer that “everyone has their price” and when it comes to making money online it’s often a case of “everyone has their price and you can find it on their ‘advertise here’ page“!

Naturally, the thought ran through my mind that I could make a killing by charging people to be a guest blogger on CashQuests.com! Unfortunately, I’m a well-known hater of guest blogging as the content is usually self-serving and there is no way that I’d risk my readership by selling out to guest posts….unless the price was high enough!

As ChrisG noted, it has great money making potential when you consider how many people are looking to get noticed and generate publicity. With all the blogs out there that support guest blogging, there must be a lot of money to be made.

It is quite a new concept for blogs and as there isn’t really an established market it is difficult to judge prices. Hence, I’d like to ask you two questions:

Assuming that you could post links to your own site or use any of your own affiliate links

- How much would you pay to be a guest blogger on CashQuests.com?

(all offers over $100 accepted)

and more seriously…

- How much would you charge someone to guest blog on your own site?

Answering the second question has the obvious benefit that you may actually get an offer and make money!

I’d love to read your responses in the comments.

I would be happy to charge just $77 for someone to be my guest blogger.

Kumiko - it’s a good idea in theory. Personally, I would pay $50 for a guest post on your site. And on my site, I would charge someone the same as what I charge for a Sponsored Review - $120.

I have to admit that I’m sided with the original post about guest blogging - I don’t like it at all. I like personal blogs that are generally written by one person and that person injects his personality into that post. This blog is actually one of the few exceptions to that!

I would feel really weird guest blogging for somebody else as I would feel that I couldn’t be myself and the idea of somebody guest blogging on my blog is even weirder - it would feel like a stranger in my home. Probably silly I know :)

guest blog post price should be a lot higher than paid review since it’s not your words. i would charge above $500 for such thing, but only relevant ad post would be accepted.

If I had a PR7 blog like you Ades, I’d probably charge the same!

Given that I’ve already guest posted on Problogger.net and johnchow.com (among others) for free it seems a little crazy that people would start charging for it. However, if it becomes the norm to charge for a guest post then that’s great, it’s another way to make money online so how could I object!

Thanks for dropping by Matt - great to hear the thoughts of a professional guest blogger!

I guess a key point is that you did those posts for your own benefit - to publicize your brand. Hence, it would make sense that both of those sites could have charged you for the post. Even if it was only $10, it still makes it a money maker.

I think that if you were paid by someone to guestblog it would ruin all the credibility that your site has. If I found out a blogger that I liked to read was getting money for letting people post on their site, I would seriously start to wonder what the hell I am doing reading this site?

Also kuminko, what was the name of the plugin that you use to email people after they leave a comment for the first time?

by mubin

http://www.justinshattuck.com/comment-relish/ is the plugin you are asking for Mubin.

I wouldn’t pay anything to guest blog on another site, but also I wouldn’t charge anything to have someone else guest blog on our site.

My point?

I think guest blogging should be done if you “trust” the other author, and as a fun swap. As long as there was some agreement up front as to boundaries on the content topic, its not a big deal if its in the same niche and done as a swap between sites of similar credibility.

free of charge for both.

I’d charge 5 bucks if they did not include any affiliate links (except for a link to their blog), and 15 bux if they included affilliate links. :)

by jackbravo

Free charge for both unless the guest post on your site had affiliate links.

I won’t pay to guest blog on CashQuest - I’d give you a cut of my takings from the affiliate links in the post.

At the moment I’d charge nothing for a guest blogger on my site since nobody would pay to do it on a new blog - but I’m open to a cut of any affiliate commissions

 Won’t it be better if I purchased a review in your site for $80, than paying $100 for a guest post?!!

I think if the guest blogger is offering a good thing to the visitors, he won’t fear purchasing a review….he will only pay more to post a guest post if he is afraid your opinion in the review about his program is a bit negative…

by Roseate

Free of charge.

Though if the guest wanted to use affiliate links, I’d most likely turn him or her down… I’ll get the benefit from those, thanks.

Guest posts are there because the guest writer has something to add, and I believe that writer’s site is of value to my audience!

I like the idea of guest blogging, in moderation and as long as it adds something to the overall conversation of the blog. Of course, if it’s just one big affiliate ad or something else totally self-serving it won’t do this.

As paying to guest blog it’s an interesting concept and I’ll bet it will happen soon and become rather common, sort of like radio payola.

Given my blog is brand new I’m seeking guest bloggers for the publicity value rather than cash value so, yeah, in a way, I’m selling out.

I doubt anyone would pay to guest blog on my site, but it’s an interesting idea. Maybe something to try out in the future!
