Digg And The HD DVD Key - Digg Just Got Buried?

Digg has buried themselves into a huge hole today by removing a submission regarding a secret HD DVD Key hack. Why was it removed? Because HD DVD is a sponsor of Digg! Digg chose to show an extreme lack of integrity by bowing to sponsor demands and applying censorship to their site.

For all the talk about Web 2.0 and leading the charge for ‘user generated content‘, Digg has really shown their true colors in that it is actually ‘sponsor approved user generated content‘! Is this the new Web 3.0?

Digg users are currently staging a mass revolt against the censorship by flooding Digg with submissions that reveal the key to the world. Users are Digging every post about the hack straight to the front page and as I write, all of the Top 10 stories on the Digg frontpage relate to the HD DVD hack. Needless to say, this revolt is causing a lot of servers to crash!

Is this the day that Digg died?

UPDATE: Digg has succumb to user pressure and stated:

today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.”

The above statement is perhaps the biggest bit of BS that I’ve read in a long time. It’s a nice bit of spin to say they’d rather go down fighting but the only alternative was going down red-faced and hated. What would you prefer? Be known as a hypocritical, sponsor-influenced censoring site or go down fighting the government? If the government took them down they’d re-launch more popular than ever, but if their users took them down it would be to their doom.

It would have been much more preferable to just explain their actions and continue on the path they had chosen.

I can even imagine Digg advertising the tagline “We’re not influenced by sponsors” now.

Kevin - looks like it’s back up now. It will be interesting to see how they recover from this. I doubt they’ll really lose any users but I think we’re going to see a lot of “aftermath” posts make the front page in the next few days!

Can’t wait to see Digg get into trouble. They so ignorant when it comes to replying to mail in which I’m asking why I was banned. Let’s see them be ignorant on this one.

I never thought i would say this…but for whatever reason,

Digg is a democracy, I always thought that it is just a manipulative site which gies you immense traffic.

But this has tilted the odds in favor of Digg. By allowing, users to digg the story, they showed us a couple of things:

1. They give all the power to Digg’ers’

2. The story just needs to be popular amongst the people to come on the front page, there is no right and wrong.

Wow I actually knew nothing about this until I came to visit your blog today, Kumiko. Thanks for always having the information! :)

Of course I’ve used Digg before but I’ve never really liked them a lot, there are a lot of better sites. Seeing this going on is pretty entertaining! ;)

Kumiko, I dont think you have quite grasped the situation.

Bob the reason why you were banned is most likely to do with you digging your own stories more than once. How sad can you get.

Maybe if you didnt moderate comments on your blog Kumiko, you would be in a position to comment.

Anthon - Thank you for your comment although your criticism isn’t very constructive.

1. What exactly aren’t I grasping? What have I missed?

2. Most of the stuff from blogs that hits the frontpage has been dugg by the blogger themselves - although usually under a different profile. It’s not sad..it’s promoting and a fact of life on the internet.

3. Yes, I moderate my comments but I don’t promote my content as being “user generated” either. It’s “Kumiko generated” which means I get to publish whatever I want. To NOT do that would be hypocritical!

Have a great day!

James - Agreed. The post was written ‘on the fly’ and as more information comes appears, the facts of the matter appear to be changing.
