‘Do Follow’ Installed….And Uninstalled

Installing the ‘Do Follow’ plugin and removing the ‘no follow’ tag is one of the best ways to get readers to comment on your site. Period!

This technique was part of my Never See ‘0 Comments’ On Your Site Again article and I still believe that those who use any of those techniques will never see the dreaded trail of ‘0 Comments’ on their site again.

But it’s not right for this site.

Without a doubt, I sense a growing movement in the blogosphere towards the removal of the ‘No Follow’ tag and when I initially removed it, I was excited at the prospect of receiving more comments on my posts. I don’t know whether it was due to the tag removal or the Wordpress comments system being super-awesome, but the fact of the matter is that comments did increase! As a matter of fact, they tripled!

But Cash Quests is not (and never has been) about receiving a large number of comments. Cash Quests has (and always will be) about my quest to make money online and all my successes, failings, experiences and anything else that I learn along the way! For me, just knowing that one other person is reading this site is enough to keep it going and giving away hundreds of links in the comments doesn’t enter the “money-making” equation.

While I love every comment that I receive and enjoy replying to as many as I can, having the ‘No Follow’ tag removed does not help me make money online and I don’t believe that writing one comment justifies a backlink from this site.

I sell links. I don’t give them away unless it’s to something worthwhile!

It could be argued that this is “selling out” and submitting to advertisers, but that’s exactly what this site is about!! I’ve never claimed to be a “Web2.0 User-Generated Social Networking Site” and I’m actually a bigger fan of Web1.0!

It can also be argued that I’m not rewarding those who help build my site, but that’s exactly what the ‘Top Commentators’ plugin is for. Those links are also ‘front page’ links instead of lesser-quality ‘in-post’ links. And I’m also giving $100 cash to my supporters!!

Kevin at Blogging Tips has argued the PageRank leaking issues associated with the ‘No Follow’ dilemma and they are just as true for me as they are for him.

For a large number of blogs out there, removing the ‘No Follow’ tag is a great way to increase comments and does add value to the blog.

But it just doesn’t make sense if you want to make money online.

At last……better late then never! I weighed all these and then installed a no follow plugin that is different and actually rewards the long term commentators of a blog….its I-Follow - Conditions Apply

by TheAnand

I’ve checked out your plugin and quite like it. It’s all about different sites being suited to different methods and there isn’t a “one plugin fits all” answer the ‘Conditions Apply’ plugin would suit a lot of sites.

by Princess Kumiko

Haha, nice work. There you go Kumiko…though you do have the Top Commentator plugin, which is kind of like a conditions applied DoFollow…

I disagree with your thinking and feel that all of my comments are worthwhile and deserving of a backlink. I feel that’s what makes a community, so to speak.

I don’t want a community of people who are just here for a backlink.

This site isn’t a community. It’s all about me.

woaht? you just spoke your mind out…its about making money…then I wonder why you even need readers?

It’s pretty obvious this site is all about making money!!
I love all my readers but a blog isn’t a “community”. A community is a site like Digg where anybody can submit content. Without readers, Digg would be empty and die. If a blog doesn’t have readers, it can still continue and create content. Bloggers *want* readers but don’t necessarily *need* readers.

As a perfect example, check out my old domain. Nobody is reading it, but content is still being created and it’s actually earning more money than the new domain!!

Hate to break it to you, but with a PR of Zero, people were probably not here for the backlinks. A backlink for a PR0 site does very little good.

Do follow has never been something for the really established bloggers. New bloggers can drive traffic through the “dofollow club” and increase the number of comments they get.
Why a new blogger even needs comments? Well. If your blog is new then it is hard to get traffic. And even harder to keep it. Lack of comments is often a sign of a MFA or a low quality blog. Often readers just look at the number of comments and don’t even read the posts. So it’s crucial to have comments when you’re a starting blogger.

But for established bloggers, especially with high PR, it’s one of the stupidest things to do. Let’s take John Chow for example. On some posts he has over a hundred comments. What would happen with dofollow? A madness.
I’m not even talking about spam(viagra, cialis, casinos) and comments with very low quality(good post, :), haha). And why give away for free something that you get paid for?

Conclusion: If your a new blogger with and don’t have many readers then you can install dofollow to get more traffic and comments. When you have enough readers, which doesn’t mean your ultimate goal, just enough to get really started, then remove the dofollow.

We have a winner! While there are lots of site supporting the ‘do follow’ movement, there aren’t many really big names getting behind it.

I don’t think there is necessarily a conflict here… links you sell are likely to be in your sidebar, or through some other mod to your template.

Link-backs from comments only appear in the posts and have no profile as such…

I think there is an issue of bleeding PR, but there are countermeasures to this… if you think about some of the other plug ins available for WP, and understand how PR works….

I think it comes down to how you generate traffic… if your traffic comes predominantly from google then don’t follow… but as this is a “blogger blog” I would have thought, in terms of traffic you would benefit from its installation.

by Jez

There’s a conflict if I want to sell in-post links.

by Princess Kumiko

Ahh I see, good point, I was not thinking properly about that one, that would put your advertisers off!!

And another thing, the $100 contest isn’t worth the time it would take to win it, I could work a little over 5 hours of OT for more than that. It wouldn’t make sense to go through all of the trouble. I’m unsubscribing from this feed today.

by Roberta

Actually you can be in with a chance to win it for about 30 seconds work. But now you’ve got no chance at all.

by Princess Kumiko

I think thats a good comp, 30 seconds is a bit ambitious, but its worth entering if you like competitions… I like the ticket system you devised, well thought out…

by Jez

You can subscribe to the feed in 10s an be entered or you can 30s to write a comment and be entered. Easy!

by Princess Kumiko

Yup easy for your readers, but how about you keeping track of it all!!

JUST over 5 hours of OVERTIME?? Haha…that’s somehow really easy or fun to do? Weirdo

I can understand your view point and maybe you’re even right… but then again, do-follow shows your love to your readers/commentators. And if you don’t want just give away backlinks - there is nice plugin called linklove, only top commentators will get link backs then… But of course, it’s all up to you :)

by Inga Oz

I thinking that there are better ways to “show love” and am considering those options.

Kumiko,
Your posts are not dated, I therefore have no idea whether you’ve already posted your evil Monday post or not.

I wont comment much on the no-follow do-follow debate but I will say this bit, whether you follow or not is up to you and it has nothing to do with the quality of yours posts therefore it shouldn’t make any difference for your readers. On the other hand I’ve noticed that you were slow on replying to comments lately, I even thought that your took a break. After reading this post I’ve concluded that after maybe you were overwhelmed. Nevertheless, I remember you advising to maintain good relations with people and I believe that replying to comments is certainly a sure way to do that.
I hope you’ll be enjoying five-figure blogging soon!

by Marguerite Jasmin

Kumiko,

I gotta disagree with you on this one. Part of making money online is getting a large amount of traffic. And part of that traffic is from the blog community in general. Since the community at large is leaning toward the dofollow, aren’t you afraid that your resistance to “giving away links” could affect your traffic?

Sara

by Sara

Traffic and commentators are two different things. With the right posts, I can generate more comments in a day than blogs with 10x my traffic.

Good on you for reading Kevin’s post (I did to and nearly had my head explode, but I plowed through it and learned a lot.

Those who somehow think removing the non follow somehow gives something back to a commentor have little concept of how page rank really works. But putting the top commenters on the front page side bar, that’s giving back with something that _does_ give a nice boost to those who participate .. so for those who somehow confuse love, page rank and money all in the same category, you’re giving out plenty your Highness.

For what it’s worth, one of the richest bloggers around and a guy who can write rings ’round most of us, Steve Pavlina calls comments one of his biggest early blogging mistakes … he has some interesting posts explaining his reasoning too … but he won’t take comments … c heck his stats and see how well it works for him ;-)
