Where To Get The Answers That You Can’t Afford

Tim Schroeder, the owner of the 30,000+ member forum Webmaster-Talk has created a new blog called eMonetized. And to put it simply – it’s good. Really good. Why is it so good? Because it’s giving us the answers to questions that we all want to know the answer to:

How much traffic can you generate from renting 15 avatars on Digital Point Forums?
Tim’s got the answer.

How many new feed subscribers will you get from $100 worth of Stumble Upon ads?
Tim’s got the answer.

How can I get free .EDU backlinks?
Tim’s got the answer.

What’s the philosophy behind the “I Love John Chow” Adsense ads?
Tim’s got the answer.

Despite being just a little over a month old and having just 30 posts, Tim has managed to provide more interesting content on one site than all of the blogs that I’ve read in the past week combined.

Producing the content has probably cost him close to $1000 in “case studies” but when we’re talking about a guy who makes a six-figure income online, I’d rather him spend the money to find the answer than to have to do it myself!

Why do I know that name?

When Tim’s name appeared in my inbox with an invitation to visit his blog, the first thought that ran through my head was “Why do I know that name?” and it was annoying me that I couldn’t place it. I searched through my inbox and even Googled him but I still couldn’t find the connection.

And then I went to John Chow dot com. It was there that it hit me that I’d seen that name because he was the guy who started the site-matched Adsense craze that ended up with large blocks of Adsense that read:

John Chow + Tim Schroeder
Best friends forever! Stop by my webmaster
forum when you get a chance.

When I saw those ads for the first time, I remember thinking that they were a smart idea and although I didn’t click on them, they had the effect of “branding” Tim Schroeder’s name into my brain. In an Adsense-flooded internet, that’s probably worth more than any click can get you!

That’s exactly what the point of his blog is too – to increase his “name recognition” and discuss all his tips and techniques in the world of internet marketing and making money online.

It’s called eMonetized, but yet it’s not…

What really struck me straight away when I hit the site was the lack of advertising. For a site called eMonetized, I was expecting sidebar-to-sidebar Adsense and affiliate links coming at me from every widget. But all I found was one tiny piece of Auction Ads that looked like it was just there so the ‘Sponsors’ section wasn’t empty.

I guess when you’re already making six-figures online that there’s no need for the pennies from Adsense and the end result is that the blog is extremely streamlined and focused on the content.

And the content is just so good

With just 30 posts on the site, I set myself the task of reading the entire blog. What I found refreshing was that this wasn’t a chore at all and I was actually eager to read all the information that Tim has on offer.

Why is it so good?

The advertising case studies that Tim has done are just the sort of posts that I love! Like most bloggers, my budget is tight and I don’t want to waste my money or time on promotions that don’t work. I often encounter advertising opportunities but am hesitant to spend the money without being guaranteed that it will work.

Tim’s done the job of spending the money and testing the programs to see what return on your investment you will receive. While they haven’t all been successful, learning where not to waste your money is often better than making money and I’d rather see Tim lose his pocket change than watch myself lose my monthly budget!

On top of this, it has the added bonus of being very, very accessible. Tim is not writing about spending $10,000 on advertising campaigns but about spending under $1000 and I can relate to this so much more than when other bloggers talk about their six-figure ad campaigns.

From the new to the advanced

Tim doesn’t just cover advertising campaigns either. While these are perhaps the most interesting, Tim has also written some “understanding the basics” posts that will help those new to the game get started on their own money making journey:

That’s all stuff that everyone should know!

Keeping it tight

The design of the site keeps it focused on the content, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for improvement away from the content. Having a content-focused site that also looks good is a mark of quality and there are steps that can be taken to improve “the look”:

  • Place a colorful logo or a graphic next to the title - It’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of the plain text header as logos and colors seem to stick in my brain more than words. And eMonetized is very grey! Something small and discreet like the Webmaster-Talk forum uses would really make the site “pop”!
  • If you desire to brand your name, give it prominence - The name “Tim Schroeder” doesn’t stand out on the site. The title “eMonetized” is great (and it’s the domain), so I’d probably recommend changing/adjusting the tagline to something like “Tim Schroeder monetizes the web”.
  • ‘Sponsors’ sections MUST to be close to the top of the page - If you really want sponsors for a blog, you need to look after them. As it is now, the sponsors section is lower than the Recent Readers widget and would be impossible to sell. Given it was showing a $0.99 Auction Ad when I viewed the site, it was really a waste of space.
  • Raise the search bar - The search bar is at the bottom of the site which is a bad placement. Readers are lazy and searching for the search bar is just too much effort.
  • Keep it all on-topic - The personal photo gallery just seems out of place on a site like this. Visitors will be looking for information on making money online and a photo gallery just seems to distract from this.

Improving these points will get the blog looking really sharp!

The next question

Being the “go to guy” for answering the questions that we all want to know, I’m quite excited about Tim’s next answer!

Tim has ordered reviews from myself, Jane May and Andy Beard and wants to know “which review provided the most bang for the buck in terms of traffic, increased RSS feed subscriptions and overall quality of the review”. So head over to eMonetized and place your bets!
