Good Little Bloggers Don’t Get Rich

“Every blogger has his or her sneaky tactics that are used in the neverending quest to gain links, readers, subscribers and money. When I first came across these tactics I began thinking about how ethical some of them were, and then I realized something: nobody gives a damn.”

That one small quote from World of Angel will rank as one of the best quotes you’ll read about making money online this year.

While many complain about the evilness of some bloggers and the tactics that they use, the fact remains that this evilness makes money - a lot of money!

Why I share unethical tactics

If I told you that I have a secret technique that will earn you $1000 overnight, do you want to hear it? Of course you do. How about if I told you that the technique was very unethical? Do you still want to hear it? Of course you still do. You may not use the technique or apply it but I bet that you still want to know what it is, right?

And that’s the power of evil blogging. It’s magnetic.

It isn’t hard to understand why this occurs. A story about a man who made millions exploiting the rich is much more interesting than the story about the man who made the same amount of money by working hard at his job. We already know the story about working hard as most of us live it everyday, but the man who exploits the rich represents something new and exotic that excites our curiosity.

Some will say that unethical tactics shouldn’t be shared and that they are leading many astray…that’s fine…but what they’re forgetting is that the unethical tactics are written for those who want to read about unethical tactics - and that’s a very large market!

If you don’t want to read about some slightly “black hat” ways to make money online, you should probably give up your quest to make money right now! You may not plan on using any unethical techniques, but to make money you need to know all of the techniques available so that you can make the choice not to use them. Not knowing the unethical techniques may also see you getting fooled by those who do know them!

Knowledge is power. Even knowledge of the unethical kind.

Monetization of ethics

Greed is good and the nice guys finish last.

If you’ve found a way to cheat the system or a way to take advantage of a program in a new way - share it! If you don’t, someone else will share it and I guarantee that they’ll get more revenue generating traffic and exposure than the person who wrote about how they’re following the rules.

‘Ethical’ is for poor people

The point of it all is that as a blogger you seriously need to consider your overall strategy for making money. The point at which “do the right thing” is outweighed on the scales by “make money” is the point at which you’ll start to seriously earn some real cash. You will then have to make the choice of whether you want that money or not.

Am I telling you to be evil? No. It’s a choice you’ll have to make yourself but keep in mind that “the evil way” to do so something is exponentially more remarkable than “the ethical way” to do something. You won’t always like it, but being remarkable makes money.

Google’s motto may be “Don’t be evil” but you have to admit that banning people from Adsense without giving reasons is a truly unethical way to increase the integrity of their system and increase revenues.

well, you are half right, kumiko.I mean evil blogging is good.but it is more on formula.if you got a formula which is ethical and it works, why not?

For me, being “remarkable” is doing the right thing while everyone around you is going the unethical route.

What many don’t realize, is that there are always consequences for our actions. Unethical tactics always have unintended consequences. The consequences may not be happening to you, they may be happening to someone else. There is a bigger picture out there. To only think about ourselves and what we can do to get to the top, is selfish.

This is a well timed post. I realised a couple of days ago that indeed the way to make money online is to be sneaky / underhand / black hat etc. I don’t want to do that. I then must be doomed to fail at my endeavours! I have a blog post lined up for the next day or two in which I list a whole bunch of things that I don’t want to get involved in.

That said, I do love to read this blog and I do like to read about all those tactics because as you say, knowledge is power.

by Caroline Middlebrook

yeah that is true.. to me it is not really being sneaky but more of getting what you want.. and those who don’t try won’t ever succeed and those are the ones who get annoyed.

I like reading about the evil techniques because I don’t want to fall for them. That, and I want to know how other people think.

As far as lack of ethics equals more money, you’re mostly right. It appears that ethics in business leaves something to be desired.

Money is one thing, but integrity can’t be bought. Doesn’t integrity have any value to you?

right on the dot bloggrrt.integrity.even how evil a blogger is.he or she must need that

That pretty much tells it all why and how John Chow became famous

By the way, what about karma

by Ruchir

Leave karma to Earl - There is a line in the sand and it seems like the truly successful jump back and forth over that line.

I think the key is and will always be - be true to yourself. If you are evil by nature - then run your business accordingly. The oppisite holds true as well.

It also depends on what you call “evil.” I’m sure we are all going to violate the TOS of the many companies we use to monitize our sites from time to time. Mainly because the TOSs are too f’ing long! I don’t have time to read 10 pages of Do’s and Don’ts. The thing is - once you are aware of the wrongdoing - then you must adjust (if you are a good person)

Everyone beats up on John Chow - but if you read his early posts - you’ll realize that he came to the blog game with a gang of traffic built in from his tech site. I’ve had to build from scratch - and it’s not easy - espically when you have a 9-5 job that’s actually from 8-6.

I definitely agree that you have to tamper with un-ethical tactics to make serious money online. Playing it safe will get you nowhere, you have to test your boundries.

Evil or no evil, it is all personal. If a person chose to go to hell, that’s his or her choice. No one can say anything about it.

“Unethical tactics always have unintended consequences.”

And ethical tactics also have unintended consequences. The difference is that those consequences are pleasant surprises, whereas the unintended consequences from unethical behavior are unpleasant blindsides.

It’s just a matter of time. After long enough the consequences will arrive.
