Has TrustRank Arrived?

So Problogger has dropped it’s Google PageRank to PR4 and so has Copyblogger. Evil genius John Chow was a PR6 a few weeks ago before dropping down to PR5 and just hours ago he went down to PR4.

My verdict - TrustRank is here!

The TrustRank method calls for selecting a small set of seed pages to be evaluated by an expert. Once the reputable seed pages are manually identified, a crawl extending outward from the seed set seeks out similarly reliable and trustworthy pages. TrustRank’s reliability diminishes as documents become further removed from the seed set.

Source: Wikipedia

TrustRank works on the principle that reliable pages rarely link to unreliable ones whereas unreliable pages will often link to the reliable ones. It’s worth noting that “TrustRank” was registered by Google as a trademark back in 2005.

While the rest of blogosphere hasn’t really been touched by a PR update for months, these big-name popular sites have obviously been affected and I predict that it’s due to them being selected by Google as “seed sites” for other blogs.

What this means is that if you’ve got links from these sites then you should (eventually) get a decent PR, but the further away you are from them indicates that you’re probably looking at the lower end of the PR scale.

Needless to say, I’m pretty happy that I bought links on John Chow.

*Update* - Mr Andy Beard has more about the updates. Looks like some of the really big names got hit too. Seems like if you have a site that has the ability to pass PR to a lot of others then Google thinks you shouldn’t get a high PR. Link to a lot of blogs = low PR? It will be very interesting to see who has all the PR6’s and PR7’s after this update.

Interesting! I’m looking forward to see what happens. As long as my page rank gets updated that is!

If the Trust Rank is coming as you said, more and more people will flood their site and the gap between the established success blogs and those new blogs will be become much more wider.

Anyway, I still don’t think this is a good way. The big blogs will just sell more links and make more money out of Google’s system!

this is kinda shocking to me to say the least.all the big boys out there got demoted in terms of their pagerank.what is wrong with the ranking system? :???:

Doesn’t really make much sense for TrustRank to give such high authority to people like John Chow when he so clearly sells links. All trust rank will do is make it easier for people to sell links and high level seeds will be rolling in the money.

PR works better than TR and the only reason these guys are getting lower PR is because they have participated in open link exchanges IMO.

My site went from a 4 to a 2 even though I sell no links and have never done an exchange. Perhaps TrustRank is the new PR; that would explain it since neither of those sites have linked to mine (for example).

I’ll need to scout out my niche more to see who Google considers to be seeds, if this is the case

Is it true there’s any trust ranks??I dont think so..
THis rank will be manipulated by Google..
ANd it will be the same like PageRank..

We’ve seen our PR slidddeeee…

PR 7
PR 6
PR 5

Who knows when it will stop!

Anyone seeing any increase? If they are just bumping everyone down then I don’t see a big deal if all of a sudden the point of measurement has changed.

My blog dropped to PR2. I’m thinking it’s perhaps time to ditch google for search and stuff. But it won’t be easy…

Google have created the monster and now they want to destroy it. The fact is, though, that TrustRank will end up being exploited just as much as PageRank.

I posted a little theory about what I think is going on here. I like my idea that they are trying to level the playing field better ;)

My blog doesn’t have any PR yet

To prove this theory you need to show examples of actual websites, not money-making blogs. I think I read that the Washington Post website went down. This is probably nothing to do with paid links, but maybe Google is just raising the bar a little.
