Here’s Why People Obsess Over Technorati

Dear Just Crap (that’s not me being nasty, it’s the name of the blog the above post was written on),
Thank you for your post regarding my site. You are absolutely 100% right. People do obsess over getting a high blog rank on Technorati and many (including myself) will sometimes go to any lengths in order to get more links and boost their ranking. You’ve asked what the point of this is? Let me tell you. The point is that by having a higher Technorati, PageRank and Alexa ranking my blog is ranked higher and deemed more valuable in many money making programs on the internet. A larger ranking means my blog is not only able to make a larger profit in these programs, but it is also deemed more attractive to advertisers. Again, this results in a more profitable site.
Unlike a personal site where rankings don’t matter, the point of my blog is purely to make money. Rankings matter here.
Additionally, being linked to means more traffic which in turn means that more people are likely to pay attention to your advertising. Considering that your domain is displaying Yahoo and AdultFriendFinder ads, you are obviously interested in trying to monetize your site - I hope you find the above information useful.
With respect to how much “ass kissing” I had to do to get under the 5,000 mark on Technorati, the honest answer is very, very little. In my time running this site, I have only asked for a handful of links and most of those requests were rejected. The links that I have achieved have been mainly due to the Z-List, the 2000 Blogger’s project and by people choosing freely to link to me from their site. A little bit of luck, a lot of hard work - but not much ass kissing.
How much ass kissing will it take to crack the Top 1,000? I’m not going to find out. While I will go to almost any lengths to increase these rankings, I’ll be too busy writing content that people choose to link to without me needing to pucker up. Ass kissing just doesn’t work as well as ‘ass kicking’ content.
You went on to say that you just cracked the 1,000,000 mark on Technorati and did it through “plain truth”. My sincere congratulations.
Thank you for linking to my site and increasing my ranking - however I won’t be able to return the favor.
I wish you the best of luck with “Just Crap”.

I say this with the girliest tone possible “He’s just jealous”. Getting a high rank is a big deal specially if your blog’s purpose is to make money I mean DUH! Congrats dear, I wish you reach top 100 and I be 99

Hey Kumiko, I hate to be one of the boring commentators who sais ‘I agree’, but I really do! For us who are out and about in the make money online nich Technorati is very important.
I think its also important not to overlook about how the Technorati rank makes you ‘feel’ about your blog. It can be a big encouragement or a downer! It sounds like the person you were writing about was just a little bitter….

Way to go Kumiko!
Whoever wants to find out what the original post looks like will end up in my blog! No traffic for “Just Crap”

Can’t say it much better than you tell it Kumiko.
Ranking higher on any list will bring more traffic (even a just crap website list).

I think his comment is uncalled for and immature.
However, while I do think Technorati rank is important it doesn’t always mean more revenue. My blog is no where near your in Technorati rank or Alexa but I get a steady $200+ monthly from adsense alone. And I’m not even trying to promote my site or do link exchange.
Personally, I believe in the “watched pot never boils” attitude. Focus more on the value content and everything else will come naturally. I suspect that most of the biggest revenue generating blogs out there are not the ones about “blog marketing”

Roy, You hit the nail on the head. There is only so much talk one can do about making money. You have to have something more… as is the case with most A bloggers.

What you fight (or kiss ass) to get, you fight (or kiss ass) to keep. So go with the flow. Content is king.

Speaking of Technorati… A while back, I was hovering somewhere around 500,000. I just checked, and now I’m around 280,000, despite not getting any fresh incoming links in the meantime. Has this happened to anyone else? Did Technorati just delete a whole bunch of low-numbered blogs from their system?

Keep it up!

I guess he was hoping that being nasty about a great blogger, who gets lots of traffic, would help him get some traffic (link baiting).
It’s just sad and my guess is that he is just jealous of your success.

Ahhh, technorati is definitely evil, and not in a good way!
