make money online

Do You Think You’re Good Enough To Be Blogging?

If you’re going to write that you don’t know much about the internet or blogging, should you really be trying to make money by doing it? The problem with blogging is that it is too easy to get your own blog! Can you imagine somebody setting up a real estate office without knowing anything about buying and selling property? I don’t think so. Yet, I see countless blogs everyday started by people who are trying to make money and have no idea how to do it. I’m not saying that I’ve have all the answers on how to make money blogging, but I certainly know more than this blogger:

I’m not going to give a link to the site, but lets just say that continually attempting to spam my comments and having one of the most horribly basic site designs does not make you an “internet marketing genius”. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have a blog. Before the idea of making money with a blog is even a twinkle in your eye, ask yourself the following questions to see if you’re ready to enter the blogosphere:

Do I know what HTML is?

Making a blog is pretty automated and easy these days, but sometimes the blog management system just won’t do what you want it to do and you’ve got to get in there and code it yourself. At the very least you should know how to align text, insert a picture and create a hyperlink. Don’t know how to do that? Don’t blog yet.

Can I write about a topic regularly?

Think you can fill your site with ‘free articles‘? Forget it. Your visitors can spot them a mile away and will skip over them. They only way to build a blog’s content is start writing! Don’t have a topic that you can write about more than once a week? Don’t blog yet. Go and find a topic.

Can I communicate with other people?

A successful blog is far from being a solo effort. You’re going to need all the help you can get from other webmasters to start building your blog’s visibility. Whether it be simply asking for a link exchange or asking for a little help with your site - you’re going to need others! It’s not just limited to other webmasters either. You have to communicate with your readers!! They’re the lifeblood of building a profitable blog and their actions are your income. Love them! Can’t build relationships? You can’t build a blog yet.

Can I be in it?

A blog that doesn’t use “I” and doesn’t express your personal feelings or opinions isn’t a weblog. It’s a website. If you want to make money blogging, get ready to put your own feelings and experiences into the blogosphere. You may even have to put a photo on your site. If you’d rather create an impersonal, purely information-based site…go ahead! But you won’t make money blogging.

Do I know how to use a photo editing program?

A site filled with nothing but text looks rather boring and won’t make your readers come back. You don’t have to be a photoshop wizard, but occasionally you’re going to need to add an image to your site to give it a little color. Think you can stick a 3 megabyte 640×480 image into your blog? Think again. You’re going to at least have to know how to resize and compress an image.

Do I want to be famous?

This is the most important question. If you’re happy with a average, normal blog then you can forget about making money online. It’s not easy to generate an online income and it takes a lot of hard work. A desire to be mediocre will see your blog be deleted as soon as you get your first case of ‘blogger’s block’. Aiming to be the biggest and the best will enable your blog to reach unimaginable heights. Don’t want to put your blog in the spotlight? Step back into the shade.

Once you can answer a resounding “Yes!” to all of those questions, then you may just be in with a chance to start making some money blogging. But the hardest parts are still to come…..:)

I’m going to print this post and hand it to every family member, co-worker, friend and stranger that asks me that very popular question, “How do I make money blogging?”

I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

“Maybe $100 a day is enough”

That’s terribly ambitious for someone that’s just starting out, let alone someone that admits to knowing very little about the web.

Thank you for this post - I enjoyed it. Glad to see you giving no glory to the spammer. While I’ve been blogging for awhile, it’s the monetization that my site isn’t ready for yet. Have to get my amount of traffic up first.

If I answer yes to all your questions do I get a prize? hehe

I know HTML, in fact I coded my own blog script :) No WordPress for me!

So hopefully this means I should be blogging!

Be careful Kumiko, no one likes dissing. Even look at Digg.com, it doesn’t matter who/what is dissed, if they deserved it or not, negative comments get buried.

I don’t think putting an image up is a good idea. You may not give a link, but the Blog title can be clearly read and its just one Google search away.

Stavanger - I appreciate what you’re saying, but spammers like this and those who claim to be “internet market geniuses” without justification deserve to be warned against and brought out into the open.

Perhaps that’s the reason Matt has started http://www.affiliatescamguide.com

Oh and by the way - I actually warned the owner of the blog after I was initially spammed that if they continued to do so I would publicly reveal them as a spammer. Obviously, the spam continued!!

Great Post Kumiko,

I sometimes ask myself if I should be blogging.

“If you’d rather create an impersonal, purely information-based site…go ahead! But you won’t make money blogging.”

Obviously you haven’t been around in the blogging world long enough. There are countless blogs (like tech, academic and medical blogs) with no personalization at all, only info., that clear 5 and 6 figures a month in revenue.

Not everyone visits a blog or a website for the “experience” or to read someone’s individual point of view on things. Some want factual information and that’s it. The fact is, information and the search for information still drives the web. Most people don’t really give a rats ass what someone thinks, they just want an answer to their question and to find the information they’re searching for.

Mac - I understand your point. I don’t really consider what you mentioned to be ‘blogs’. I call them ’sites’ which is not what the post is about and requires a completely different mindset than what I wrote about.

In any case, I’d really appreciate it if you could send me some links to the sites you mention. I’d love to check them out!
