Human-Edited Directories Better For Your Site’s Rankings

When selling items from your web site, it helps if people can find it. As you’re surely aware, search engines will rank your site higher if it has more relevant links.

Now many people submit their sites to countless directories to build such links, but what many of these people overlook is that everybody else is doing the same thing.

This is why it makes more sense to submit your site to human-edited directories rather than ones that automatically approve links. Sure, you may get into the automatic ones quicker, but in these directories, you may find your link among many less than desirable links.

With a human-edited directory, someone has to take the time to approve your site as not being spammy or just downright crappy (depending on the standards the directory itself sets). This means that your link will more likely be among truly relevant links. This is likely to help your search engine rankings more than the other kind.

Unfortunately, it can be a little harder to find quality human-edited directories like DMOZ and 19Planets than it is to find the average run-of-the-mill automatic ones. SmallBusinessNewz had a post about this very subject, and a nice little list of human-edited directories is developing in the comments.
