Make Money With Your Blog’s Death
Around 6 months ago, there was a massive surge in the number of “make money online” blogs being created (mine included) and it now appears that many of the bloggers behind them have decided to call it day and quit or start new projects. Six months is definitely a long time in the blogging world and given the hard work that it takes to build and grow a site, I can well understand the thoughts of giving up. I’ve had them myself but I usually just add a little more pink to the site and then I’m happy again!
So here’s some advice for your last post on your site!
Don’t make your last post:
“Well, it’s been fun but I’ve decided to call it day and this site will no longer be updated. See ya!”
Try:
“I just found this program called Text Link Ads where you can purchase advertising on other sites and promote your product to a large audience. It’s pretty cool. I wish I’d used it earlier as it would have made my site more successful. Anyway, I’ve decided not to update this blog anymore. See ya!”
Why is this better? Writing your last post with an affiliate link included means that whenever someone stumbles across your blog in the future, there’s a chance of them following the link and earning you a nice commission. Just because you’ve quit blogging doesn’t mean that you still wouldn’t like to receive some passive income occasionally, right? Would you complain if an extra $25 suddenly appeared in your PayPal account? I didn’t think so.
It always amazes me that more bloggers don’t write their last posts crammed with affiliate links!
If you want to earn even more from your blog’s demise, don’t tell your readers that you’re quitting, write a post filled with affiliate links and then remove the date header from your posts. Any new visitors to the site won’t know that it’s dead and may not only use your affiliate links, but subscribe to your site and tell others about it!
Your blog may make more money in it’s death than in it’s life!

@Bob - Sorry? What is a ‘ter’?
@Eugene - Get into PayPerPost. If accepted it’s hard NOT to make money online.
@Alex - I was going to suggest this to you when you quit…but then you came back!
@Haroon - I try to keep all the ideas “Kumiko Originals” and don’t get them from anywhere other than my own thoughts.
@Jaunesk - Thank you! I try to be as positive as possible…but sometimes I just can’t!

Great tip there - it is interesting to see all those ‘get rich quick’ bloggers soon realise that even making money online requires hard work too!

Nice post Kumiko and excellent thoughts. On the forum I run I see something similar. People get frustrated or tired or what and they have “announce” they are leaving like it’s a major production. I’ve always found that odd, why not just stop posting and in this case turn a negative into a positive and then just stop.

dugg the post, good article, simple idea that could definitely pay off, especially with bloggers who “take time off”
good thing you didnt quit alex

Here is to hoping we don’t have to use your advice!

I suspect your idea will not work because:
1. If someone quits blogging, their blog is probably not working out the way they wanted it to (i.e. not profitable or too much work for too little profit).
2. Ancillary to (1), traffic to the blog is probably too low in the first place.
3. No new posts –> no new outside links. The moribund blog sinks to the bottom of Google’s abyss.
Still, if the blog costs nothing to maintain (e.g. blogger), your idea can’t hurt and it costs an extra ten seconds in your valediction post.
Cheers,

Well, it’s good to make money from the last minute of your blog’s existence, why not try something positive and promising such as:
http://www.bravisa.com
I’m with Bravisa, a startup company, and we just launched our website.
Bravisa is a new online tool for anyone to earn money by selling a wide range of products without having to buy, stock, ship, or service those products. Simply pick or design products you like, markup from wholesale prices to set your selling prices, and sell products through your free store or by placing widgets in your blog. Bravisa takes care of order fulfillment, payment processing, and customer service. You make retailer size profits from every sale without the burden of product ownership or spending anything.
Let me know if you like it or not, and hopefully you can boost your income in the cash quest.

Nice idea and a good way to go out with a bang…. for the buck! Sometimes a posthumous blog attracts more attention than a living and breathing one!

Not a bad idea Kumiko. I really do not get the point of deleting an entire blog, but I guess some do it.

@Matthew - You’ve made some valid points and I tend to agree. This is by no means a solid way to make money online. But if you’re increasing your chances to make money and doing it with zero effort, it’s worth a try!

[...] Most of the feeds that I deleted were from so called ‘make money online’ sites. It made me ask myself what Courtney Tuttle asked out loud on his blog; Where did all the bleepin’ bloggers go? Did they give up because they didn’t make enough money? Did they get tired of writing about a highly saturated niche? I don’t know what happened, most sites don’t give a warning or little note about why they stopped. Maybe they should have read Kumiko’s post about how to Make money with your blogs death. [...]
