My New Domain Kicks Ass
How much traffic did I lose by getting my own domain?Zero. Actually, it’s increasing!
One of my biggest fears with moving off blogspot and getting my own domain was that I’d lose all my search engine rankings and lose the traffic that comes to me by being linked to on other sites. I was 100% wrong!
How was it done?
When moving off blogspot and publishing to a custom domain, Blogger makes the task easy by not only providing a one minute process for the transition but by changing all your URLs to automatically point to the new domain. For example:
http://yourdomain.blogpost.com/2007/05/my-new-domain-kicks-ass.html
simply becomes
http://www.cashquests.com/2007/05/my-new-domain-kicks-ass.html
And what’s even cooler is that it appears they put a 301 redirect on the old domain. This lets Google know that there has been a change to the URL but still lets you keep your search engine rankings. Hence, I’ve still got the No.5 position for “AGLOCO scam” on Google except now it’s under the cashquests.com domain - and I’m excited to be keeping that ranking because that particular search term is growing in popularity every day!!
The redirect also means that any links to one of my posts on another site will still point to the same exact post on my new domain!
The end result is that there’s no reason to lose any traffic which is proved by my Google Analytics graph:
Obviously, May 20th is the day when I changed domains and didn’t update my Analytics settings!
Blog rankings are a different story….
Not getting my own domain from the beginning was the biggest mistake I’ve made with the site. I’ve lost my PageRank 5 which I worked so hard to get and I’ve also had to start again with my Alexa ranking and my Technorati ranking.
All is not lost!
Alexa is a ranking that is based upon average traffic over time and my new domain is getting an established domain’s traffic levels. This means my Alexa ranking is probably going to end up better than what I had under the old domain. As of posting, my one week average is a brilliant 23,490! That’s almost half what it was before!Technorati rankings are just a matter of time. I’ve found bloggers are more inclined to link to a custom domain and with my $100 competition, my ranking has dropped to 54,703 in a week. At the rate I’m being linked to, I should be back at my old level in about three months.
In about three months, I’ll also have a new PageRank and this time it will be on my own domain and the cash quest will finally be able to hit gold-level overdrive!!

Congrats for the near seamless transition, no loss of traffic, no loss of sleep!
I’m tempted to get my own domain name but considering all the rankings will be lost makes me think more than twice!

It’s tough, but you’ve got to think long term. In a few months, all those rankings will be back. And Technorati will probably be even more meaningless by then anyway…

while you rectified the domain mistake…but you are yet to correct the blogger software mistake…WORDPRESS! come join the very own blogging community truly! and i think there is a custom blogger import feature in the new version…

I believe you’ll get the PageRank back in the next update. I went from 0 to 4, with almost no links.

Congratulations and way to go, Kumiko!
I, however, wish for Wordpress. I want to switch from a free Blogger domain to my own Wordpress domain. It’ll be some hard work but the longer I wait, the worse the transition will be.

I wouldn’t worry too much about page rank. You’re still listed on Google under your old domain. That is far more important. Eventually page rank will catch up.

It’s good news for those thinking of getting off free domain names.
It’s also a lot easier to remember “cashquest”.

@theanand - haha! I checked out wordpress but decided to stay with blogger. Wordpress has a few advantages, but I find blogger to be a much easier interface which means I can spend more time on the content instead of playing around with plugins. And I can’t redirect blogger to a wordpress site!
@Tay - Wordpress has some advantages. The comments system is far superior to blogger a top commenter widget is a great addition to a site. Yet, blogger is free which makes the returns a lot sweeter.
@Rhys - I hope so! I don’t know if I’ll get a 5 again, but I’m pretty confident I’ll get at least a 4. JohnChow.info received one link from my blogspot domain and got a 3!

congrats with the whole transition kumiko! it looks like everything went alright!
as far as losing page rank, that shouldnt matter at all as long as your mission hasnt changed — help us fellow bloggers earn money!
at the end thats what its all about..giving back to the community..helping out.
im sure you’ll get your page rank bank in no time!

Kumiko!
I wonder why did you lose your PR! A couple of days back I shifted my blog from bloogzy.blogspot.com to http://www.bloogzy.com and guess what? There was no change in PR!

Hi Kumiko, I’ve been lurking your blog for sometime now and I’ve too just set up a new domain hosted on blogger. I have another mommy blog with PR4 which I was afraid to switch to my own domain for fear of losing my PR. This post has given me new confidence. Thanks.

Cool beans, Kumiko.
There’s hope for transitioning yet!
I’m keeping my Paula Neal Mooney blog where it is now, but I’m excited cause I bought another new dot com and hosting for a year today.
Now I’m off to learn WordPress!
Be blessed,
Paula

[…] Cash Quests switches to new domain - Kumiko’s experience of 301 redirect seems to be beneficial. But stuck with blogger. […]

Kumiko,
When you registered your domain name, did you also need to purchase DNS hosting in order to have a CNAME record created?
