Playing The Fanboys For Traffic
Looking for a quick spike in traffic or want to give your blog a quick increase in it’s visibility? Play the ‘fanboys’ like puppets!
WARNING: The following technique is quite manipulative and a little unethical. Those who are devious may find it useful for increasing traffic… So what exactly is a ‘fanboy’? Fanboys (and often ‘fangirls’) are those individuals that are so totally devoted to a topic that it has reached the point of obsession. Their loyalty to the topic leads them to form strong opinions that can not be swayed. They disregard any differing opinions and are often hateful to those who disagree or argue with them. To illustrate - Star Wars, Star Trek and AGLOCO have a big fanboy base! You could also argue that a lot of A-list bloggers have a large group of fanboy followers.Their passion blinds their thinking…and this fact can be used to manipulate them into a traffic frenzy!
TIP 1: Write About Their Obsession
To get the fanboys to flood your site with traffic, you’ll first need to write a post about the topic that they’re in love with. This can be the most difficult part as you’ll still need to integrate it into the theme of your blog so that it doesn’t stand out as being contrived. For example, if your blog is about making money online and you want to target the Star Wars fanboys, you may want to consider posts such as “What Yoda Fans Taught Me About SEO” or “10 Reasons Why Star Wars Fans Ruined My Blog“.
TIP 2: Get Their Blood Pumping
The easiest way to get their blood flowing is to absolutely destroy their obsession. Writing about how stupid and juvenile their obsession is the most obvious and most overused way to do this. But you’ll be a bit smarter (and more evil) than that! How? By writing about how gosh darn fantastic the fans are!
Consider Star Trek fans - they have a reputation as being the geekiest of them all and they receive a lot of negative publicity regarding it. These fans are desperate for a little love! Write about how cool and hip they are and you’ll get their attention in no time. For example, to target the Star Trek fanboys on a fashion blog, a post entitled “Dress Me Up Scottie! Star Trek Uniforms Inspired Gucci?” would definitely arouse their curiousity!
TIP 3: Get Their Attention
Now that you’ve written the post, the hard work starts - promotion time! Obviously, we want to go to where the fanboys hang out and that means doing searches for the biggest blogs, forums and message boards related to the topic.
The key here is to get the fanboys to follow a link to your post without them knowing that you’re trying to do so. I see lots of bloggers on forums write, “Hey! Check out my post here…” only to be labeled as spammers. The trick? Become one of them! When registering for a forum or leaving a comment, give yourself a nice fanboy handle - something like YODA_LUVR113 or TREKGOD12 will usually suffice.
Next, when linking to your post, don’t appear as a spammer promoting your own site but as a fanboy letting the other fanboys know about the post. Try something fanboy sounding like, “So when will the new movie be out? I’ve heard it’s in production now. BTW, you guys should check out this post - it’s about how Chewbacca can help solve your credit card debt! LOL!”
Easy! Now just stand back and wait for your flood of traffic!

The best thing about the technique is that it focuses on a demographic that is usually quite web savvy and into tech/gadget orientated sites. Those characteristics also describe a lot of Digg users. Although sometimes the traffic generated from the fanboy forums isn’t huge, it only takes a few of them to Digg it to the front page and increase your blog’s visibility.

Watch out for “The Revenge of the Fanboys!”

This is a good lesson in link baiting and leveraging current hype, too!

Kumiko,
This is a great idea! I talked with Brian Ginsberg about a similar idea over at his site (My Name is BLOG) and he gave a similar twist.
Take something that you normally don’t talk about it, put a spin on it that DOES fit in with your genre, then blog about it.
Great advice from both of you - thanks!

Hoy! That was really hilarious. Just love it. Start fanning ‘em and they’ll start fanning you back!
Keep up the fun. I’m here first because I subscribe to your email. Maybe that’s another topic for you to ponder on.

LOL Kumiko great post! very entertaining! especially the Yoda pic!
and I think you might be on to something…

That is a little manipulative but I can see how it can drive traffic and increases visibilty. Though I’m not sure that traffic will be coming back.

Great idea. Thanks.

I think the best way to use fanboys is to create a fanboy mix.
“Master Yoda made millions from Agloco and bought himself a brand new star-ship Enterprise!”
How’s this for playing fanboys?!
by Alex
The Yoda thing cracked me up. Point well taken.
I don’t think I could handle the Trek thing though.
by James
Just like what you did with Agloco member hahahahaha.

you are so cute, i like your blog very much
Can i add your blog??

Great article! I often hang out in forums with a lot of fanboys (I am personally into tabletop RPGs, although not fanatical about them), and I can see how this can be used very well.

now that’s really truth u have there
i notice as well these kinda criticism post drive a lot of traffic and of course loads of comments, with flame of course
but as been said, is quite risky coz reputation might drop among the opposing fan boys/girls

The only problem with this is you’d have to know A LOT about the subject you’re writing or else fanboys will smell the deception. You can’t just use basic things that everyone knows like “use the force” or “beam me up”. You’d have to throw in terms and facts that only a devotee would know for them to take you seriously. But if you’re just looking for traffic and don’t care about stickiness then I guess it doesn’t matter. In that case you might as well just lie about the link and say it’s a Star Wars post when it’s not.
But if you’re hot then fanboys will read whatever the hell you write and keep coming back.

Great idea Kumiko!
I never thought of intentionally targeting fanboys and/or fangirls, but it would probably work.
I wish I would have read this post earlier because I recently posted about Arashi (because they annoy me so much), and if written properly it could have done the trick… I think.
Next time.
