Success Is All About Timing (and a little about being evil!)
One of the most important things that I consider when writing blog posts is the timing.I’m not talking about whether you should post in the morning or the evening, but the timing of your subject matter. For a post to be successful, it is crucial that the post’s topic be relevant and current to people’s interests.
Why would a post written today related to “American Idol” be a thousand times more successful than a post related to “Elvis Presley“? Because “American Idol” is currently in a lot of people’s minds and as it is a popular subject matter, it is more likely to be linked to. Lots of posts are currently being written about “American Idol” which makes it easier for a link to your post to sneak into posts on other sites!!
Add to that the fact that “American Idol” is currently quite a hot keyword in the search engines and you’re more likely to get a nice traffic spike through search engine traffic!
So when AGLOCO started getting big, I wrote about AGLOCO. When Britney Spears was front page news, I wrote about Britney. When John Chow received an iPod vibrator, I started a campaign to get him to review it. The result? Lots of incoming love from other blogs who were also writing posts about these topics…and many more links from blogs who were just writing about current news!

But timing is not just being topical - it’s about immediately seizing opportunities as they arise…and sometimes being a little evil about it!!
This month I seized some evilness - and was rewarded nicely! First, John Chow’s popular blog celebrated it’s seventh birthday and John Chow wrote how he didn’t own all the domains for his site. Faster than you could say “Happy Birthday to URL”, I had registered www.johnchow.info which has resulted in a large number of hits through type-in traffic and via his site after I commented on how I had bought the domain! Earnings from the traffic have greatly exceeded the $1 that I paid for the domain!!
Next, I was searching the internet this week when I clicked on a MyBlogLog avatar that looked interesting. I was directed to the users MyBlogLog page and noticed that the user was doing quite a lot of surfing and getting involved in communities. After clicking on the homepage for the user, I received a “Site does not exist” message….!! The site they listed as their homepage didn’t exist!!
What would you do in this situation? Dismiss it as fake profile or a deleted site and forget about it?? No!!
I quickly registered the site (it was a Blogger homepage so it was free!) and added a forwarding link to Cash Quests! It took about 30 seconds and has resulted in some lovely traffic as the user continues to surf and send their fans to my site! Haha! Evilness!!
How do you utilize timing for your site’s success?
Rich people subscribe to Cash Quests

And I used to think you were so nice and innocent - lol

Good timing

Right, there are quite a few dead links on mybloglog that people list as their homepage, it makes you wonder why.
But that’s one way of taking advantage of their stupidity.

Actually I disagree when you say time of the day is not important. I have written a small article which will explain this concept . Has worked very well for me sofar.

And stealing domains is just bad!
(please delete first comment I posted as it had a typo and was incomplete)

That’s some excellent evil-ness on your part. Don’t let the pink fool you, folks!

Some excellent examples of taking advantage of opportunities and timing.

That trick with MBL is truly evil, I think I would rather inform the owner of his mistake..
by Alex
Johnchow.info is definitely very crafty, if you had a better TLD you can probably sell it back to John at a ‘reasonable’ price.
I’m not so sure about the MyBlogLog though, hopefully you will give the blogspot domain name back to the profile owner if he/she asks for it.
by Stavanger
Bob - I think that time of day is important too. I meant that that type of timing simply wasn’t the topic of the post. I’ll save that topic for another day.
Stavanger and Alex - You’re both too nice!
A lot of people make money by picking up recently expired domains and cashing on the domains pagerank or traffic. This was a blogger site that was free to register and won’t expire..so it must have been deleted or never created. It’s mine now…I’ll never give it back…but maybe sell it back….

Mr Nan - If I didn’t tell my secrets, what would be the point of this site?
“Watch me make money online - but I won’t tell you how!” probably wouldn’t work!!

You are right Kumiko… Keep posting and I’ll learn from you. (How about your adsense?)
by Mr.Nan
That MBL method is a unique way to get traffic!
Keep the blog I say… the person joining all the different communities and sending links to everyone is probably a spammer (so many on MBL).

PS. love the pink!

“I had registered http://www.johnchow.info which has resulted in a large number of hits through type-in traffic and via his site after I commented on how I had bought the domain! “
How does this work ? Type-in means that people type in johnchow directly in the address bar. .info page doesnt appear in the first page. Do, how do you get traffic from this .info domain ?

Hi Kumiko! I love reading your blog, you’re obviously very talented! You should sign up for ads with Yahoo! Publishing. It’s just like adsense! Just do a search for Yahoo publishing and sign up. You may want to remove the banned by Google information if you do it, at least long enough for them to review your site.
