The Top 100 List - Better Than PageRank?

Mark from 45n5.com has put together a great list of the Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs that is sure to become a fantastic reference tool for comparing how well certain blogs are performing.

It’s a great idea and I’m having a lot of fun comparing how CashQuests.com performs against other blogs on the list and discovering some new “make money online” blogs that I didn’t know about. There’s a lot of new money making opportunities to be discovered!

CashQuests.com is currently sitting at #29 on the list although you have to keep in mind that the list is based partly on PageRank so you could argue that the list is actually 4 months out of date.

<digression>What’s the freakin’ deal Google??? You can update the search engine results five seconds after I publish a new post but it takes you more than 4 f***ing months to export PR to the toolbar!! Seriously, what value does your toolbar have when the information on it is four months old?? It’s like doing a search and getting the top results from 1991. Get real!!</digression>

Looking at the Alexa rankings alone, CashQuests would actually make the Top 10! I’m sure once Mark gets that $100 that I sent him to tweak the algorithm, you’ll see CashQuests shoot up the list. I’m already receiving some traffic from the list so things can only get better.

Personally, I see the rankings on this list as having a lot more value than any of the rankings taken separately and definitely a lot more valuable than any rankings assigned by sites such as ReviewMe or PayPerPost.

However, while it would be a difficult task as not all sites publish it, I’d like to see RSS readership included in the ranking algorithm to gain a more accurate view. In my mind, it’s a lot more valuable than a Technorati ranking which has become just a reflection of how many link trains you’ve entered.

Mark has also posted a brilliant video that explains how he conducted an e-mail promotion to promote the list. Although I didn’t respond in time to get included in the video, I received one of his e-mails and it was an excellent example of how to be personable and not too pushy when approaching other bloggers. The fact that it was personalized for CashQuests.com specifically really caught my attention:

Hello,

I recently put together a list of the top make money online blogs.

http://www.45n5.com/top100/

Your rank is currently #25 ;-)

The list is for readers to help find new blogs like yours and also to help
existing bloggers know how they rank against others.

If you know of anybody that might like there blog on the list please pass the
link along.

I’m also making a quick post/experiment about how I’m emailing people to tell
them about this new page ;-)

Thanks,
Mark Wielgus

The fact that myself and others are writing about his list now is perhaps proof that he’s on the right track with how to raise awareness about your content.

I’m going to put it out there and say that recently 45n5.com has been providing information about making money online that is even more useful than the stuff on Problogger. While Problogger is clearly the master of “blogging theory” and is almost an academic on the subject, 45n5.com has been providing practical stuff from the trenches of the blogosphere which I’ve applied to turn a profit.

On top of that - it’s hilarious! Subscribe to 45n5.com
