Why You SHOULD Still Care About PageRank
Yaro Starak wrote 1,940 words today about the Google PageRank penalization and came to the conclusion that “we should really stop caring about PageRank“. A number of other prolific bloggers who were also penalized have written similar posts and all have come to the same conclusion.
Personally, I find it all a bit fake as I doubt that they would have reached these conclusions if their PageRank had actually increased! As it is now, it appears like they are all trying to convince the blogosphere that PageRank doesn’t matter purely because one of their income streams has been hit and they’re trying to minimize the damage.
A more honest representation of their thoughts would be “I’ll tell you PageRank doesn’t matter so you can keep paying me $300 a month for a link!”
But here’s a little secret…
and you won’t find it written anywhere else…
YOU SHOULD STILL CARE ABOUT PAGERANK
I don’t need 1,940 words to tell you why it still matters - I can do it in five:
“People will pay for it“
Whether you like it or not or whether you think it’s the way the world should or shouldn’t be, the fact is that there is a market for PageRank and people are willing to pay money to buy it.
Whatever Google has done this week hasn’t changed the fact that a link or domain that is PR7 is still worth a helluva lot more in some people’s eyes than one that is PR0.
I’m not saying the market is going to be around forever, but right now it’s still very much alive and kicking and trading in PageRank is an excellent way to make money online.
Want proof?
I sold a PR4 domain today that had very little traffic or backlinks and got $65 for it. Without PR, it would only have been worth the price of it’s registration - $9.95.
You’re kidding yourself if you think that it won’t still be worth more than $9.95 after a few months.
So don’t tell me that I shouldn’t care about PageRank.

Lol you’re posts crack me up! Can’t argue with that. The only value that anything has is what people will put on it so if people put a value on PageRank, then PageRank still has a value.
But still, that’s a short term view. If you sell links/ads/whatever based on PR and you lead advertisers to believe that they are going to get lots of traffic based on your great PR, if it doesn’t pan out that way then you’re going to have a high turnover and you’ll be forever chasing new advertisers who still value PR.
This makes me think of your post yesterday about good little bloggers not getting rich. This whole mentality seems very much like a lot of hard work. You’ve always got to be on top of the latest thing, you have to watch the market like a hawk to know whats valueable right now, you have to be on the bleeding edge of all thge black hat techniques. Blah blah.
Ugh! so much effort! I’d rther sit back, do my thing and hope it works out

Great post
I totally agree. PageRank made Google what it is today. All these bloggers are acting childish in my opinion.
PageRank commands respect, and just because we’re all getting “owned” by Google, we can’t just activate our defense mechanisms and pretend that it’s meaningless.
Most bloggers are going with the sentiment:
“Big deal..who even cares about PageRank anyways. I don’t care about Google.”
The answer:
“Everyone.”

PageRank isn’t the fair or predictable commodity that it once was. It now appears that instead of relying solely on the quality and quantity of backlinks Google is now getting personal - hitting penalising sites they just don’t like the sight or sound of. Very hypocritical if you think about it, considering that the name ‘AdSense’ was actually stolen by Google in the first place.
I think Mike Perry summed it up pretty well the other day - if a site like ProBlogger now has the same PR as my personal blog (PR4) then there definitely is something wrong with their calculation.

Yep, im still waiting for my first pagerank update so I guess it does matter
by Abdalla Ahmed
It maybe relevant still, but if Google continue to behave like this it won’t be in the near future…

hilarious, I was thinking of writing almost this exact post this morning.

Google’s page rank is annoying but many people still judge a site based on the rank.
by Shoutfan
yes, i agree with you. All those “PR victims” are just consoling themselves. If Google PR is not important, then why are these victims writing about it? Thanks, Google!

[...] Many make money online gurus adviced that we should not care about google pagerank, it’s just a measurement by Google and it doesn’t reflects the real situation on traffic and etc…i can only agreed with their point of view if your are a BIG SITE like JohnChow and you have multiple sources of income online which can get rid of google pagerank. If you are a small startup site like me, which doesn’t have much visitors and writing paid post is your main source of online income, PR still a BIG MATTER to me. And YES, i totoally agreed with Kumiko on Why You SHOULD Still Care About PageRank. [...]

you are right Mr CQ. People still believe about PR when its come to selling or buying link. Am very new to bloging. a One and half month baby. But am very much curious about my PR when google will assign one.( its a Quarterly process @ google i believe). So one should keep his/her finger cros when checking his/her PR with PR check toll. I’m with you Miss Kumiko,
Let’s say to the world, Pagerank does matter!

I think that pretty much sums it up.
by esofthub
Totally true, If the page rank does not matter why text link ads did not accept my blog when it was pr 1. It is now accepted. It is obvious that Page Rank matter. I do not believe everything those seasoned bloggers say!!!! Peace!!!!

PR is a thing that used to concern me. I got over it and just started working on trying to build a good blog (which I hope I have beendoing). This weekend my PR went from 0 to 2 which I was happy about. I will just continue to work on my blog and not worry too much about PR. Take a look at a video I have on my blog from darren rowse.

As someone commented on my blog, talking about PageRank is great linkbait.
People do write about it (or rail against it)… because they either want to join the discussion and get some traffic/links/attention from it.
The early birds easily received well over 200+ citation links for a single post.
Opportunistic blogging is good strategy.
by Maki
Kumiko, so did you lose your PR as well ? A lot of people who have not done any link purchase or selling have lost their PR.

My PR is zero, so I think that it doesn’t matter and I hate it.
by WelcomeToMyIsland
I was just posting about the same thing. If all these big blogs had seen their PRs increase, they’d be saying very different things - such as ad rates will be increased due to increased PR.
by emigre
This post cracks me up. First off, selling a PR4 blank domain for $65 is laughable in itself because as soon as the whois data changes, the site is going to lose it’s PR anyway
Second, I’ve sold domains with PR0 for thousands of dollars. What’s my secret ? Easy, 3 and 4 character domains and domains that are short and pronouncable or have keywords nested in them.
Essentially what you’re saying is Pagerank is necessary to facilitate the sale of links or domains to pass the PR and in case you didn’t read all those blog posts, Google’s recent PR ambush was targeted at webmasters doing those very things you mention.
by Chef
Well, it doesn’t matter whether you are PR0 or PR5, but who want to pay you when you are PR0. So it still matter.
by jaunesk
Totally agree …. all this banging on about it not mattering wouldn`t be the case if they hit PR 7 +
